Prozac belongs to a group of antidepressants that is called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI). The medicine is used to treat depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (bulimia), panic disorder and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Prozac may also be used for other purposes.

You should be aware that Prozac may interact with some medicines. Do not take Prozac together with astemizole, sibutramine,dexfenfluramine, thioridazine, fenfluramine, terfenadine, tramadol, or monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). You should be careful if you take cisapride, propafenone,tricyclic antidepressants,clozapine, cyclobenzaprine, lithium,cyproheptadine, selegiline, or medicine for seizures.

At the beginning of taking antidepressants you may have thoughts of committing a suicide. Prozac is FDA-approved for use in children with depression.

You must tell your doctor, if you are allergic to any drug, pregnant or nursing, before taking Prozac.

Take this medicine according to your prescription. Do not take it in larger doses in order to make it work better. You shouldn’t chew the tablet, you should swallow it whole. If the medicine upsets your stomach, take it with food. Do not stop taking Prozac, even if you feel better. Try not to miss doses. But if you missed one, take it as soon as you remember. Do not take double doses in order to make up the missed one.

You should store Prozac at room temperature away from heat and moisture.

Do not take Prozac, if you have an allergy to any of the components of the medicine.

Prozac will not start working at once. Up to 4 weeks may pass before you will see the results. Do not stop taking Prozac without the permission of your doctor.

It is recommended to see the doctor regularly, while taking this medicine, especially at the beginning and when changing the dose. Inform your doctor at once if you have panic attacks, severe restlessness, irritability, anxiety, agitation, difficulty sleeping, hostility, impulsive feelings or worsening of depression. If you take care of a patient, taking this drug, you should watch these symptoms and tell the doctor if there are any as soon as possible.

You are not recommended to drive or operate machinery, while taking Prozac. Drinking alcohol, while taking antidepressants, can be dangerous as it may lead to undesirable side effects.

Children may be sensitive to the effects of Prozac, that’s why caution is advised. Inform your doctor, if you are pregnant. Taking this drug can be dangerous to the fetus. Do not take Prozac if you are nursing.

Taking the drug can cause some side effects.

Changes in appetite, drowsiness, dry mouth, dizziness, decreased sex drive, impotence, increased sweating, diarrhea, headache, flu symptoms, runny nose, sore throat, nausea, weakness, weight changes are among less serious side effects. If you have side effects such as: agitation, confusion, blistering, fast heartbeat, seizure (convulsions); tremors, shivering, muscle stiffness or twitching you should call your doctor at once.

If you have any signs of an allergic reaction such as: difficulty breathing, hives or skin rash, swelling of your face, lips, tongue or throat; call an emergency immediately.

Inform your doctor, if you have worsening symptoms of your depression.

Common symptoms of overdose are: fast or irregular heartbeat, fainting, vomiting, seizures and restlessness. If you think, you have an overdose, contact your local poison control center or emergency room at once.

Prozac can interact with other medicines. This can lead to unwanted side effect and even preventing the medicine from doing its job. That’s why, you must inform your doctor of all the medicines, you are taking.

Keep Prozac out of reach of children.

Don’t give the medicine to people, who were not prescribed it. You mustn’t use Prozac for other health conditions.
